Project description

The project will include two solar chimneys that are considered as vertical service spaces as they do not contain an occupancy. Accordingly, they are required to be separated from the remainder of the floor area by a 1h fire separation. Without the 1h fire separation, the resultant space interconnects the 2nd to 10th storeys of the building.As the solar chimney spaces are essentially noncombustible voids, and do not contain any services, this Alternative Solution has been prepared using Sentence 3.2.8.1.(1) as the Code reference ¿ that is, treating it as an interconnected floor space required to maintain 1h fire separation between storeys. The required level of performance will be provided on a performance basis, based on an enhanced sprinkler design for the building and fire modelling to demonstrate that a reasonably sized fire will not break the glass and interconnect two or more storeys.
