Project description

Alternative Solution - 200 Russell Hill Road is a building required to be of noncombustible construction. OBC 3.1.5.16.(1) requires combustible pipes that are not concealed within a wall or within a concrete floor slab to have a flame spread rating of not more than 25 and a smoke developed classification of not more than 50 if used in a high building. System 15 PVC pipes proposed to be used in the building have a flame spread rating of not more than 25, but does not meet the smoke developed classification requirement to allow its use in a high building.Except for System 15 PVC pipes that are concealed in a wall or concrete floor slab and except for sprinkler pipes, System 15 PVC pipes in the building will be coated on the exterior with Safecoat PVC coating to improve the smoke developed classification to not more than 50. All coating application will be as per the manufacturer instructions. Supporting documentation has been provided to indicate that Safecoat PVC coating can be applied to PVC pipes and its fittings to enhance the smoke developed classification to 35 and 45. Furthermore, samples of the PVC pipes coated with Safecoat were sent to the UL Testing Facility in Toronto for testing to CAN/ULC S102.2. The test results indicate the flame spread rating and smoke developed classification of the System 15 PVC pipes coated to be 0 and 20 respectively.The proposed alternative solution to coat the System 15 PVC pipes with Safecoat PVC Coat will therefore offer a level of performance deemed acceptable in OBC 3.1.5.16.(1).
