Project description

Alternative Solution proposal - building will include a seasonal enclosure to the existing tier of seating, (i.e., bowl) that will allow the RBC Amphiteatre to accommodate concerts during winter months. The requirements of the OBC with respect to Group A, Division 4 occupancies is intended for occupants gatering in oper air seating areas. As discussed above, the intent of the design is to maintain the current Group A, Division 4 major occupancy, even though the building will be enclosed at certain seasons. Therefore, to maintain the same major occupancy classification of A4 for the enclosed bowl area at certain seasons, it is proposed to provide active mechanical ventilation and natural ventilation (smoke control system) for the seating area and egress paths. Seating and egress areas have been designed based on A4 requirements, and since smoke protection is implemented for the enclosed bowl areas, the same A4 occupancy classification can be maintained within seasonal enclosure of the Bowl. In accordance with Article 3.3.2.11 every seat is located so that the travel distance is not more than 45 m measured along the path of travel from the seat to an opening to a passageway leading from the seating area. Majority of these passageways leads to an exit through the west and east concourses. Since the East and West concourses will be mostly open to exterior and partially covered by a roof these spaces are deemed to be an extensions of the Bowl. OBC does not contain requirements pertaining to travel distances within these spaces. Therefore, the analysis of smoke layer and egress paths (including egress time) utilizing computer modeling is proposed. The smoke and egress modeling determined that occupants could leave the building prior to the smoke layer descending and affecting their egress. In accordance with Sentence 3.2.2.11(3) Exits from outdoor stadia or grandstands shall be located not more than 25 m apart. The amphitheater is located on an island; therefore, it is not possible to meet the requirement of Sentence (3). Considering proposed measures the proposed design including seasonal enclosure meets the intent of the Code with respect to egress and exits requirements pertaining to outdoor places of assembly occupancy, and as such, the proposed design is acceptable.
